Series Description

Chiaroscuro is the protagonist in the luminous abstract works of this series. Layers of bold markings in black and white pastel on black ground, create dynamic textural compositions that reveal the beauty of... juxtaposition and interaction.

“By choosing to use only additive marking and layering, no reductive smudging or erasing, I am embracing the power and potential of each mark. What happens cannot unhappen. Yet each new action has the potential to affect what came before — enhancing, obscuring, transforming — in unexpected and beautiful ways as past and present interact.”

After creating the images through an intuitive drawing process, the artists explore their detail. Then, focusing in on fragments of the whole they create a kind of visual vocabulary with syntactic potential. In this way the original story unfolds, yielding the possibility for many statements and stories to emerge.

Custom framed with a 4-way hanging system, the piece can be rotated and viewed from different perspectives, each view revealing its own statement and energy. Arranging artwork in this series — on their own, in pairings, or groupings — the collector is invited to join in the creative conversation begun by the artist and build their own visual narrative.
